Many of us have heard or used the term “Christian” when referring to ourselves or others, but how many of us truly know what that means. Webster’s defines Christian as “one who professes belief in the teachings of Jesus Christ.”  While this is true, professing a belief in something is not always enough.  A true Christian is a person whose own life adheres to the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.  I run into many people that say they are a Christian and then turn around and talk about people, curse, go out drinking with friends or listen to rock music.  They do all of these things still believing that there is nothing wrong with it since they have repented, believe in God, and go to church once a week. I am here to tell you that doing ungodly things, even if you have repented, will keep you out of heaven. The following versus address this type of Christian, ones I refer to as “Worldly Christians.”

James 1:26 “If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.

James 2:26 “For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

We must strive to be more like Jesus. Our lives must show the kindness and love of Christ just as He did. This is the type of Christian I work hard to be. It is not always easy and there are many times I fail, but that doesn’t mean I need to throw in the towel. The reward for a righteous life is too great to throw away just because I falter every now and then. The following versus address this type of Christian, ones I refer to as “Biblical Christians.”

James 1:22 “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”

James 1:27 “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.”

Falling to the temptations of the world is just what Satan wants.  If he can get you to go to church, but still live a worldly life, then he has won. We all need to live in the world, but we don’t have to be of the world.

James 1:12 “Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.”

James1:19 “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath”

Don’t let worldly pleasure distract you from your ultimate goal which is to live a Godly life, win the lost and get into heaven.
